Technological and medical breakthroughs seem to be continually moving at a rapid pace today, when compared to 10 years ago. With all this new development, people are living healthier and longer. I recently saw a headline: “HIV -patients’ life expectancy rises” and read the article “How Long Do You Want to Live?” via: The New York Times – Sunday Review. Which re-enforces we are not only living longer but, also living longer and better with disease.

Many of us can expect to live to a ripe old age, what does this all mean for you personally in terms of retirement? Planning for this time of our lives has become increasingly important. What is an IRA?

  • IRA stands for: Individual Retirement Account.
  • Basically an IRA is a savings account providing big tax breaks and making it an excellent savings vehicle for your retirement cash.
  • Introduced in 1974 under the Employment Retirement Security Act and for a time was restricted to workers who did not have coverage with a qualified employment based retirement plan. This changed in 1981 with the Economic Recovery Tax Act, allowing all taxpayers under the age of 70½ to contribute to the IRA.
  • There are several different types of IRAs: Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, SEP IRAs, and Simple IRAs.
